This US patent was granted in 1951 to Joseph Langer of Bronx, New York for use with roll film. There was a means of separating backing roll and film but in this design the film was left attached to a short length of backing paper by leaving the adhesive strip intact. Then the film was pulled by means of the length of backing roll into a deep tank apparently by gravity. Here are the drawings:
